Cross-country route optimization for forest inventory in Finland
Authors: Henna Etula
Forest inventory in privately owned forests in Finland is based mostly on remote sensing and partly on field inventory carried out on foot. The efficiency of the inventory is important for maximizing the quantity of information acquired with limited resources. It is difficult to decide the best route between forest stands located apart from each other. The Finnish Forest Centre has utilized the path optimization tools of ArcGIS to develop procedures for identifying efficient inventory routes.
