Refuge and Sanctuary Usage by the Florida Manatee in Kings Bay, FL
Authors: Danielle Sattelberger
Aerial survey data from 1983 to 2012 was used to examine the seasonal change in manatee distribution within Kings Bay, Crystal River, FL in order to assess the effectiveness of current sanctuary sizes and locations. Spatial analysis revealed a strong correlation between high manatee density and artesian springs during the winter seasons. Across the summer periods, manatee density patterns were not uniform. The efforts made in this study hope to enhance both manatee presence and protection.
