Abstract
Using GIS to Measure Access to Resources for Pets
Track: Community Planning and Economic Development
Authors: Greg Miller
Building off of methods developed by the USDA to identify food deserts, the ASPCA has begun analysis to determine where pet owners have limited access to critical resources such as veterinary clinics and pet supply stores. Geographic analysis at the Census tract-level is supporting an improved understanding of which areas in a community are currently underserved. With knowledge of where pet resource deserts exist the ASPCA and other organizations can work together to improve access.
