Developing Business and Marketing Tools for a Deregulated Utility Industry

Sarah Lee VanWagner

In the era of deregulation of the electric utility industry in California, Southern California Edison (SCE) business is undergoing significant changes. In response to these changes, SCE has initiated a "new sales and marketing effort directed at the wise and expanded use of electricity" (Bass, 1997). While SCE's GIS has focused on traditional utility-type applications in the past, this new direction has required a tremendous amount of GIS support. This paper will discuss the new corporate initiatives being supported by GIS, how the support of these initiatives compares with the traditional utility focus of GIS applications, and the applications being implemented to support these initiatives.
