Orthoimagery: The Information Building Blocks for your GIS
Track:  Remote Imagery
Author:   Mladen Stojic

Orthoimages serve as the ideal reference source for collecting and displaying planimetrically true information required for your GIS. The ortho component of an "orthoimage" provides accurate X and Y positional information concerning ground features, whereas the image component provides a graphical "bird's-eye" representation of ground features. Together, orthorectified imagery provides an abundant amount of information concerning the earth's surface. This paper addresses the issues and advantages of using ortho imagery over standard and geocorrected imagery for collecting spatial and nonspatial information for a GIS. Cost/Time benefit analysis and issues associated with mosaic quality are also addressed.
