Sufficiency of Geodetic Infrastructure of Turkey for GIS
Track: Geodetic Control
Author(s): Caner Gueny

GIS takes a crucial role in most government institutions, private companies, etc. Since they would like to serve their citizens and customers in the most efficient ways, they would like to rapidly update information on their systems with reliable and accurate data. As is very well known, there is not only a single coordinate system validity for most countries, especially in urban areas. This is much more dramatic in Turkey. Therefore, GIS should have a fundamental coordinate system that could be transformable to the other existing coordinate systems to eliminate coordinate inconsistency. In effect, this is an easy mathematical manipulation if every thing is in order and is not for a country like Turkey whose lands are 92% under the risk of crustal movements and hence earthquakes. In this paper, the sufficiency of the geodetic infrastructure of Turkey will be discussed in regard to GIS application needs.
