Title: The Virtural Big Room; Be Here Now with Immersive Reality
Abstract: Hypothesis
We believed a virtual big room would improve project/multiple organizational performance, and enable more team members and stakeholders to actively engage with the project through its lifetime.
We set up an immersive environment on top of a traditional project repository cloud webspace, and added cloud-based modeling, along with virtual model walkthroughs and personal immersive engagements through avatars.
We experienced the ability to globally link and leverage resources (Stakeholders including Design and Construction professionals, Building Information Modelers, and the facility users) into a synchronized project learning space. Our virtual big room enabled the project knowledge capture, the interaction, and the real-time project development in BIM to occur with minimal expenditure of real-estate, travel, and hardware and software costs, maintaining all project information in a single central location. At the end of the construction, the project big room could continue being operated as facilities management tool.
While our successes were quantifiable and diffusible, our failures outlined the limits of integrated project development and delivery through a shared space, and the "Avatar" interface may have been too bleeding edge.
