Abstract
Use of Low Distortion Projections
Track: Geodesy
Authors: ROGER PATOCKA
The prime goal of this paper is an attempt to help clarify the utility and value of a coordinated, statewide coverage by LDP's. Methods for measuring land and natural resources have progressed tremendously in the past several decades. It is important that the use of data derived from these methods be better understood. Consequently, this paper highlights the roots of surveying measurement techniques and their convergence. A more comprehensive goal of this paper is to promote better coordination and use of spatial databases among the user communities. A goal of 20 ppm maximum distortion for each LDP zone has been set for Iowa, and another goal is to keep the number of zones to a minimum while not crossing county lines. The Iowa DOT, with support of the Society of Land Surveyors of Iowa (SLSI) and other GIS, Engineering and Surveying organizations, plan to move forward with releasing by Summer 2012, a RFP for prequalified geodetic survey consultants to design LDP in Iowa. The successful consultant will hopefully achieve LDP design later in 2012.
