Abstract
Bringing Your Land Surveying Practice into the GIS World: NOW
Track: Technology
Authors: Anthony Vannozzi
Imagine if you woke up tomorrow morning and you had to provide your clients with all their deliverables in a GIS ready format effective immediately. What would happen if all the data coming into your firm and all the mapping going out had to be in a GIS - Tomorrow? It is becoming clear that for many surveying firms, particularly the small to mid-sized firms, investment in a lot of pre-crisis training to smoothly transition to a GIS based platform is not in the cards. As a result, when the time comes to bring GIS into many practices it will likely be at the last minute and as a direct result of specific client demands. It is also a very real possibility that firms may be faced with needing to become "overnight" GIS experts just to survive. This workshop is intended to provide attendees with a realist action plan for what they would need to know and what they would need to do when it is decided that they will need to be offering GIS services immediately. Attendees will learn about which aspects of GIS are most likely to be in demand by their clients and why. Strategies for purchasing hardware and software, revising workflows and training will be presented, all with an eye towards getting up to speed as quickly as possible.
