UC Riverside: Utilizing GIS as a Critical Campus Resource

Karen Jordan, UCR, Capital and Physical Planning

University of California, Riverside concluded the initial development of a campus GIS base map in 2007 and began using the data within the Capital and Physical Planning Department. Prior to 2007, the Capital Planning Department recognized the lack of an accurate cohesive campus CAD map. The process of creating an accurate campus map is an integral part of UCR's planning process from preliminary site planning to final construction drawings. Originally the systems purpose was to support the Campus planners and Office of Design and Construction with the eventual goal of being the foundation for all Campus maps. Over the past three years, there have been many challenges implementing GIS as the campus standard. These obstacles have been overcome with the dissemination of data and maps to multiple departments and the development of a secured GIS web site utilized by campus administrative staff. This presentation will discuss how implementing standardized GIS data throughout Campus Departments has streamlined the mapping process at UCR and the lessons learned during this process.
