ArcGIS Server includes powerful out-of-the-box REST- and SOAP-based geospatial Web services for mapping, analysis, and visualization. With ArcGIS 10, developers can extend the server with their own custom REST- and SOAP-based services that perform additional specialized analytic or visualization functions. These custom services are implemented as ArcObjects software-based SOEs that run within the core server and are exposed via the server's standard REST and SOAP endpoints. Walk through the process of extending the server with a custom service implemented in .NET, which is exposed via both REST and SOAP using a simple example extension. You'll also learn about the security model for services and extensions as well as the ability to write SOEs hosted within the optimized map service introduced with 9.3.1.
