While ArcGIS Server provides a robust framework for making geoprocessing tasks available on the web, many types of processing remain too compute-intensive to provide in a web-based environment for a large number of users. The presentation will provide an outline of a number of techniques we have developed for the optimization of server-side raster geoprocessing, including: distributed processing across multiple cores, processors and servers; cloud processing on Amazon Web Services; development of a custom raster file format; binary messaging protocols to manage communication between different component parts; and the use of Varnish and Cloudfront for memory-based caching of files. Implementation of these techniques will show how they can be used in conjunction with ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server and the Flex API.
