Cloud Love: Moving Off-Premise Step-By-Step

—Brian Noyle (DTSAgile)

By now it's no secret that Esri has teamed with the nice folks at Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and is providing a cloud-based solution for ArcGIS Server. Maybe it's your IT department delaying deployments; maybe it's the need for rapid scalability; maybe you're just one of those smart cookies that wants some added flexibility in your existing ArcGIS Server infrastructure. At any rate, you're going to need to know what's involved in moving your apps to the cloud so you can tackle this process with a minimum of hiccups and unauthorized charges to your boss's credit card. This talk will use a case study application developed for the US Forest Service to show you step-by-step how an application leveraging the Esri product stack gets built and deployed into Amazon EC2. We'll address design and deployment considerations and show you what's involved in migrating existing applications to an off-premises solution versus how you'll design completely new applications to ease the deployment process. We'll also discuss the almighty dollar and show you how we've used Amazon Web Services (AWS) and ArcGIS Server to rapidly prototype projects and demonstrate apps for our customers while keeping costs down.
