Full-Year Project Based GIS in the High School Curriculum
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Josh Lapidus, Adam Schwartz

GIS at the Academy of Urban Planning is a highly scaffolded, full-year course. Beginning with AEJEE tutorials, students use GIS as a tool to understand urban development and change. Throughout the year ArcGIS is integrated across the curriculum into science, national and local history and urban planning. As a culminating project, students will distribute their work online using ArcServer publishing features to create dynamic web based maps.

This year’s final project comes out of a partnership with Newtown Creek Alliance and the Center for the Urban Environment. Students are creating an array of multimedia maps including student guided walking tours for public education purposes highlighting the environmental crisis at the creek.

This presentation will share our experiences and successes in building a coalition of partners to create a GIS project that takes learning outside of the classroom while teaching students to integrate geography and technology as an interpretive tool.
