Keys to Success in Geospatial Education
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Authors: Bob Coulter

Building on the ongoing research and evaluation efforts from two National Science Foundation-funded geospatial education projects, this session highlights teacher attributes found consistently in more successful implementations of GIS. Conversely, teachers leading less successful programs rarely exhibit these attributes.

Challenging the notion that 'anyone can do GIS,' data from these two projects combine with informal observations from other professional development efforts to yield an emerging typology of success. Implications of this research will be considered, including its potential for identifying pre-requisite or co-requisiste skills that need to be considered in the design and delivery of geospatial professional development experiences.
