News Mapping, Creativity and Critical Thinking
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Brad Howard

The purpose of this exploratory study is to present a preliminary plan for teaching higher-order thinking skills, especially critical thinking and creativity, while teaching students about news mapping. This preliminary plan is based on a critical review of the body of literature defining critical thinking and creativity, as well as of the literature describing effective pedagogy related to improved higher-order thinking skills. This plan is a response to the prevailing consensus that critical thinking and creativity are not improved by a passive pedagogy, and it is intended as a qualitative prelude to a multi-method evaluation of the effectiveness of the plan.
