AbstractVisualization and Knowledge Management Tools for Policy Planning Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education Author Recent developments in GIS have given researchers the ability to accurately reflect the socioeconomic disparity among communities and highlight areas for target-based intervention and planning. Context of an area can be simplified and visualized for comparison by combining key variables (as composite indices) and calculating neighborhood disadvantage scale, Distress Indices (See Haque and Telfair, 2002), Location Quotient and Cluster Mapping (Haque, 2007, 2008). By using spatial analysis techniques, significance of a particular socioeconomic disparity can be accurately and scientifically described via GIS maps. Furthermore, recently, with access to Google Maps and Google StreetView, the experiences can be meshed and shared with community stakeholders for planning and developing knowledge management strategies.
