Balancing Bits and Paper: Creating a Portal for MAGIC
Track: Using GIS in Libraries and Museums
Authors: Randolph Boyd, Douglas Dechow

Providing access to GIS and paper map resources is an integral component in building a map collection that will be useful and attractive to multiple academic disciplines. The presenters will review the process they developed and issues that arose in producing an effective multidisciplinary online portal for Chapman University’s new map collection, MAGIC (Maps and Geographic Information Center), a collection that combines traditional paper resources with modern GIS workstations. Some topics that will be covered; identifying potential GIS users on campus and gaining their buy-in, configuring the portal software, LibGuides, to maximize student access to GIS resources, and how the portal supports the collection development policy of the GIS and paper map collection.
