Teaching Africa
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Carolyn Vieira-Martinez

The purpose of this project was to reformulate classroom exercises for an existing 100 level survey on African History, incorporating a computer mediated instruction component that experientially trained students to map historical language communities with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. Once implemented, students were, at the end of each term, able to view composite maps of language communities, expanding, contracting, migrating, and differentiating in African history. This presentation will review the classroom process, the early successes, existing obstacles and future directions.
