AbstractUsing GIS to Create a Healthier Nutrition Environment Track: Community Projects and Partnerships Author 4-H Interact Club: GSI (GeoSpatial Investigators) have been busy about changing the food options they have at local convenience and grocery stores. Utilizing the Nutrition Environment Measurement Survey and Geographic Information Systems, they have created a map that paints a picture that they believe contributes to North Carolina's 33.5% obesity rate among children. With a convenience store right across the street from their high school and facts in hand, these youth worked with local store managers to change the position and pricing of healthier options. Students use video interviews, Nutrition Environment Surveys, blogs and of course maps to tell how they are making an impact in Wake County, North Carolina. In this session, you will experience the journey from awareness to powerful impact.
