Abstract

Paper
Using Spatial Statistics and Geostatistical Analyst as Educational Tools
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Konrad Dramowicz

The paper demonstrates how some Esri tools are used for conducting student research projects and delivering various courses offered for post-university students at the Centre of Geographic Sciences in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia, Canada. These tools include such ArcGIS components as the Geostatistical Analyst extension to ArcGIS and the Spatial Statistics Tools. Students learn how to use such spatial analysis techniques as point pattern analysis, global (OLS) and local (GWR) regression, global and local spatial autocorrelation, G-statistic, hot spot analysis, and measuring geographic distributions. The Geostatistics component incorporates such issues as determining the optimal type of kriging and best kriging model, neighborhood search, studying global trend, errors as well as creating probability maps. The paper is illustrated by examples taken from major research projects in GIS for Business completed by students.
