A Wave of GEMs across a Campus
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Amy Work, Debbie Moeckel, Sid Cuff, Walt Aikman

This presentation describes the contours of a collaboration between SUNY Cayuga Community College (CCC) and the Institute for Application of Geospatial Technology (IAGT) in Auburn, NY. The collaborating partners are deploying geospatial information technology across the curriculum to bring geographic thinking to bear in courses as diverse as English literature, botany, microbiology, natural resource conservation, and marketing. The principle vehicle for developing and sharing geographically empowered instruction are GEMs: Geospatially Enabled Modules. GEMs are instructional tools that are built upon geospatial technology, and take the form of lecture support materials, case studies, and interactive learning tools that can be integrated into a variety of course work. Broadly speaking, four levels of GEMs are taking form: technical demonstrations and data summaries; interactive, instructor-led group assignments; independent student assignments applying geospatial data, and; advanced projects in which students will use geospatial software to add and explore their data.
