Mapping and Spatial Analysis of Alibates Flint Quarry Pits
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Chris Davis, Robert Wishoff

This presentation will outline the methods of mapping the 731 flint quarry pits at Alibates National Monument. Using ArcGIS, we used an unpublished data set, collected by Susanna and Paul Katz, to successfully map and interpret the spatial pattern of the quarry pit layout. This type of analysis has never been done before in North America, and the results offer the opportunity to understand more about one of America’s “forgotten” National Monuments. In addition to outlining the methods used to create the GIS, we will present our interpretations of the analyses and discuss our plans for future research of the area that involves the use of Esri software.
