Marketing MAGIC: Using Outreach to Advertise Library-based GIS Services.
Track: Using GIS in Libraries and Museums
Authors: Douglas Dechow, Randolph Boyd

Chapman University's Leatherby Libraries recently expanded their collection development efforts to include a dedicated map library known as MAGIC (Map And Geographic Information Center). The standard tool in academic libraries for teaching is the Bibliographic Instruction (BI) session. In an effort to promote MAGIC, a BI for the Marketing Department is under development.

The typical BI is an hour-long, standalone educational experience. Students of the Marketing Department are among the heaviest users of the library’s digital resources, and thus, a natural audience for a new digital resource such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This paper details the requirements, planning, and implementation of a BI that can be used to introduce GIS to Marketing students. As a part of this program, we will demonstrate the use of GIS tools and data to complement standard Marketing functions such as environment scanning. We will also discuss the benefits of visualizing demographic data.
