iGETT Learning Unit: Burn Severity Mapping using Landsat imagery
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Christine Lewis

This is an introductory to intermediate remote sensing learning unit, developed for the NSF-funded iGETT project (Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training). Students imagine it is Mid-November 2003 and they are a GIS Analyst for the United States Forest Service (USFS). They have been asked to deliver a burn severity map of the 2003 “Old Fire” wildfire in the San Bernardino Mountains, which burned 57,618 acres (23,317 hectares) in less than two weeks, from October 25, to November 2, 2003. Using ENVI software and Landsat Imagery, students explore the structure and potential of using Landsat imagery followed by image preparation and burn severity calculations. The resulting image is imported into ArcGIS where the number of acres of burned in different ownership categories is calculated.
