Maps use in California's Education and the Environment Curriculum
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Authors: Gerald Lieberman

The California Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) is a landmark education program that resulted from a law passed in 2003. This law mandated the development of a curriculum that would bring education about the environment to California’s K-12 students. The 85 standards-driven instructional units comprise the first ever environment-based curriculum approved by the State Board of Education for use in California’s schools. Making extensive use of map-based instruction, the EEI Curriculum covers a cross-section of over 100 of California’s science and history-social science standards. The maps are an important element of helping students comprehend the relationships between natural systems and human social systems. Ultimately, the curriculum helps students understand how they influence the environment and how it influences them. This session will demonstrate how the EEI Curriculum uses maps to help students be better informed when they make choices that affect the environment.
