Abstract

Teacher Capacity for GIS: Modeling the Ends and Means
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Authors: Bob Coulter

Research and theory development undertaken by two NSF-funded projects for upper elementary and middle school students has led to the development of a model articulating the skills and dispositions teachers need to lead effective geospatial projects. This model argues that a level of teacher agency encompassing specific technological and pedagogic skills is required for high quality implementation, as is an appropriately supportive learning environment.

This session gives an overview of the model, along with a formative answer to the 'so what' question: Given the model, what are the implications for professional development? Come and think together with your peers about how we can best support teachers at different stages of professional growth.
