Abstract

GIS Student Challenges: Finding Authoritative Sources on the Web
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education

A graduate student, tasked with leading a lesson on "service oriented architecture" (SOA), selected a "talking head" video commercial from a vendor as one of the "readings" for the class. That confirmed that at least some of the best practitioners of GIS are not skilled in using the Web to research GIS and technology topics. Why is that? How can those key professional (and life) skills be taught in to a typically technology heavy GIS curriculum?
