Abstract

4-H GIS Community Service Learning
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Authors: Beth Hecht

Kansas 4-H embraced the concept of incorporating GIS technologies into the 4-H youth development program. As we educate youth and adults about GIS and spatial thinking, they engage in cutting-edge technology, increase their confidence and their understanding of complex community issues, and become empowered to make positive impacts in the world around them. The GeoTech Community Service Learning program trains, equips and supports team leaders who work with local youth to apply GIS concepts in identifying, analyzing and addressing a need in their community. Partnerships with ESRI, Fort Hays State University, the Kansas Geographic Alliance, and others, provided access to software and expertise needed to grow and sustain the 4-H geospatial project. Ongoing support and accountability keeps teams moving forward and overcoming challenges faced as they began their work with local youth and a GIS community service learning project.
