Geospatial Service-Oriented Architecture for Research Libraries
Track: Using GIS in Libraries and Museums
Authors: Pete Reehling

The University of South Florida (USF) Library System is facing challenges in defining its mission within the university's research community and in striving to become a research library. The traditional role of academic library serving as a repository where scholarly works are acquired, organized, and accessed no longer satisfies the needs of our researchers. For our researchers to be successful they also need the library to be an active partner that provides an infrastructure that enables researchers to organize, publish, and disseminate scholarly works. In an effort to address our research challenges the USF Tampa Library partnered with USF Research Computing and Esri to implement a Geoportal Server. The goals project are as follows:

1. Partner in USF's Data Management Plan
2. Support Grants and Other Research Efforts
3. Provide and Infrastructure for Open Access Publishing (Scholarly Works & Data)
4. Implement a GIS Collection Development Plan
5. ARL Membership
