Abstract

GIS in the Community: Mapping Historic Water-powered Mills
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Authors: Michael Krimmer, Charlotte Cain

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) students are developing an 'historic GIS' of mid-1800's water-powered mills located in the Shenandoah River and Potomac River watersheds. This project is a year-long collaboration between NOVA and the Friends of Colvin Run Mill (FOCRM), a local historical society. As part of this effort, students are developing various historical and contemporary layers including mills, roads, buildings, streams, lakes and rivers, and canals. The geodatabase, metadata, and maps developed for FOCRM will be highlighted in October 2011, at the Society for Preservation of Old Mills annual conference.
