Track: User Presentations - Teaching
Authors: Randall E Raymond
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) states in the new Social Studies Content Expectations in Grade 6 and 9 that students should: "Use information from modern technology such as Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite remote sensing to locate information and process maps and data to analyze spatial patterns of the Western Hemisphere to answer geographic questions." The Social Studies Department of Detroit Public Schools (DPS), under the direction of Sheryl Jones and with the support of DPS GIS Specialist Randall E. Raymond, has taken a proactive approach to meeting these new Social Studies Content Expectations by providing workshop training activities for All District Social Studies teachers and developing a Saturday Academy of GIS and Geospatial Technology for DPS high school students. This presentation will discuss the accomplishments of the first year of this district wide initiative.
