Abstract
MAPS TravelWise National K-8 Schools Project
Track: User Presentations - Teaching
Authors: John Schaefer
Since 2009 with support from the UDOT's TravelWise program community volunteers use ArcGIS Online in K-8 classrooms to develop awareness of travel options leading to substantive behavior change.
MAPS uses ArcGIS Online with innovative best learning practices across the curriculum achieving the goal of empowering elementary school students and their teachers to use mapping in their personal decision making and global understanding.
MAPS is a skill-building experience in which students and teachers use technology authentically by making maps of their local travel, adding writing, images, and movies - using ArcGIS Online with critical thinking and inquiry-based learning.
These media rich student made maps are then made available through presentations to the local community, becoming an advocacy tool for sustainable community behaviors.
It takes a child to raise a village.
The goal is to scale the project to virtually every K-8 school in the US over the next 5 years.
