Abstract
UNIGIS: Teaching ArcGIS for Server Via Distance Learning
Track: User Presentations - Teaching
Authors: Mariana Belgiu, Martin Loidl
Nowadays GIS resources can be accessed from several different environments: from traditional desktop clients to any sort of mobile device. GIS web services enable the user to interact with GIS resources anywhere and anytime, creating the premises for better collaboration and communication within GIS communities.
The new UNIGIS module "ArcGIS for Server", which was developed as a joint initiative of UNIGIS International Association, aims to give students practice in using GIS services. Along with hands-on exercises major underlying technologies such as web services, available protocols for server-client communication, cloud-computing and existing efforts dedicated to standards development within the GIS domain are introduced. The online platform ArcGIS.com serves as an example for a cloud-computing application helping the students to search published GI resources and to share their own resources via web services.
In this presentation the learning objectives, the content and the didactics of the module will be shortly introduced.
