We have conducted in-depth video studies of high school students participating in the innovative dual-enrollment Geospatial Semester program offered by James Madison University and collaborating Virginia high schools. We have analyzed the video to assess students' spatial language use, and begun to assess the students' discourse and problem-solving strategies. We will present our initial findings and discuss their implications for the role of GIS use in impacting students' spatial thinking.
