GIS is multidisciplinary in nature, and students are diverse in academic backgrounds. Virtually no empirical studies have extensively examined students’ academic preparedness for undertaking GIS learning in higher education. Based on a survey conducted in an introductory GIS course at the University of Waterloo, the study reveals which academic backgrounds are statistically significant for proficient GIS learning. It promises to enhance student preparation in GIS education.
