Abstract
Below the Ground – Not Your Usual GIS Applications in Biology Research
Track: Learning and Research Lightning Talk
Authors: Charlene Nielsen
Ecology and evolution in the biological sciences emphasize how geography matters for organisms and ecosystems everywhere, at any scale, and even beneath the terrestrial surface. Spatial methods of three research projects at the University of Alberta highlight uncommon applications that help us understand: (1) earthworm effects on the boreal forest; (2) plant root competition; and (3) dinosaur fossil bonebeds. These below-ground explorations demonstrate the advantages of GIS in unexpected ways.
