In The New Geography of Jobs, economist Enrico Moretti asserts that innovation is a key engine of prosperity. Some governments have launched open data initiatives to spur economic development through “civic apps.” Universities are key in producing the human capital needed to realize opportunities for innovation afforded by open data. Leading university GIS centers are challenging students to imagine and create geo-enabled civic apps. We will present case studies from Arizona State University.
