GIS has a growing place in the K-12 classroom but is not used nearly as often as it could be. Teacher education can be greatly enhanced by the inclusion of hands-on experience with GIS in the classroom. By comparing teachers who have been made aware of GIS and its relevance in the formal classroom and teachers who have participated in an applied GIS education workshop, it was found that a hands-on experience will provide greater encouragement for use of GIS to teachers.
