Abstract
Geospatial Grave Guide: Students Help Make Local Cemetery Searchable
Track: Learning and Research Lightning Talk
Authors: Daniel Stooks
Hollywood Cemetery, established in 1847 in Richmond, VA, contains 60,000 inhabitants. As a result of its age, many cemetery records don’t contain details about those buried, making it hard for visitors to find basic information like dates of birth and death. Students from an area high school are working to photograph, update records, and use GPS receivers to create a searchable map. Data collected by students through this service project will result in less work contracted to GIS professionals.
