Users of GIS and mapping applications may not understand the limitations of the data. Using the wrong coordinate system can increase measurement errors by as much as 30%. This presentation provides an overview of an interactive and engaging approach, whereby students measure and compare distances and areas using ArcGIS desktop and field-based activities to assess data limitations. The educational curriculum used in this module is publically available and is appropriate for any geographic region.
