Track: Learning and Research Lightning Talk
Authors: Sheila Steinberg, Steven Steinberg
This paper examines how GIS is used to understand people, places and environments. We present case studies where GIS is essential to data collection, analysis and action phases of applied research and draw from our experiences working with rural communities. Cases focus on discrimination, unhealthy local environments and lack of access to food and health services. In each case, place-based policies rooted in local culture and space-are generated to effectively address these problems.
