GIS in British Academia

British academia enjoy the best of both worlds, well up till now: central funding and independence in action. This combination of academic freedom and security has propelled British academics to be at the forefront of innovation and science. It also meant that through their collective organisation they have managed to keep abreast of the latest technologies, one of which is GIS.

GIS software, ArcInfo, has been widely available to UK academics since 1990 through a combination of central funding and annual subscription. This paper will attempt to chart the use of GIS, in general and ArcInfo in particular, in academia.
