Naval District Washington's (NDW) GeoReadiness Center (GRC) acquires, maintains, and manages the geospatial component of Navy real property data; part of the Navy's Internet Naval Facilities Assets Data Store (iNFADS). NDW's GIS is a powerful interface to iNFADS and other Navy systems since asset records are typically tangible, readily georeferenced features. The challenge is serving a robust common installation picture when no common business process or underlying data model exists for Navy business systems. Without confidence that the data represented on a map is accurate, decision makers could be forced to abandon GIS technology as an available tool. Within NDW however, the correlation between GIS and other business systems evolves through established triggers in each business process, making the Navy's asset management tool a powerful geo-enabled system.
