Space Utilization Optimization at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC)

—Brad Ball, NASA LaRC GIS Team

Langley Research Center (LaRC) GIS Team continues work on interior space management and optimization tools. Application of this technology to another NASA Center and to address a major change in mission, from Space Shuttle flight system to a new architecture called Constellation, demonstrates the broad benefits of this technology. The Human Space Flight Program at NASA has gone through such transition processes several times over the past 50 years using manual and gradual transition. However, budget constraints within the Federal Government have never been as dramatic as we are currently experiencing. The benefits of Optimization technology will be demonstrated by shortcutting iterative timely and costly manual office consolidation solutions in favor of fewer more optimal automated space allocation solutions, which also minimize the amount of off-site leased space. Challenges and lessons learned will be addressed along with recent developments and the overall Space Utilization Optimization development plan.
