MedMap—Enabling Visualization of Health Assets for Preparedness and Planning

—Robert Shankman, Department of Health and Human Services

MedMap is used to display Public Health and Medical and response data in a web enabled tool that is being used in response efforts ranging from H1N1 surveillance to the response of the typhoon in American Samoa and so much more. MedMap is an integrated informatics system suitable for adaptation to a broad range of local to national scale events. The system incorporates information from various sources into a single secure visual environment for enhanced situational awareness, assessment, and management of a given natural, man-made, or pandemic scenario. This system supports policy analysis, planning, course of action comparison, incident management and training in a variety of domains. It supports the needs of decision makers at various levels, e.g.:

In an event such as an improvised nuclear device, there is a need to immediately determine medical care sites, resources and mobilization points and modify needed data as it becomes available. Rapidly changing conditions and the need for a large regional and national response requires extensive pre-planning and a highly flexible system. MedMap allows for constantly changing data to be updated and added as the information becomes available or changes. Included in this MedMap is the ability to incorporate the HHS playbooks to enable scenario planning as well as real time establishment of features based on the playbook criteria.
