Building a Consumer-Oriented Geospatial Architecture for MARFORPAC

—Brian Russo, MARFORPAC

USMC/DoD Geospatial & Information Services (GI&S) infrastructure for the analyst and producer has been traditionally well-supported. However, access to basic maps and geospatial services for the general user has not. The general user has resorted to using commercial tools such as Google/Yahoo map websites, unnecessary tasking of analysts, or inefficient PowerPoint/C2 (FalconView, C2PC, CPOF) copy/paste workflows. Marines Forces Pacific (MARFORPAC) recognized this requirement for simple "maps to the desktop" to enable simple selfservice of GI&S for the general user, built atop a robust product (C/JMTK & other)/GIS framework for interoperability via GeoRSS, ArcGIS, OGC, et al. MARFORPAC has developed a command-wide geospatial architecture using ArcGIS Server 9.3, ArcGIS API for Flex, ArcGIS Explorer 900, the C/JMTK appliance, and Business Intelligence (BI) integration with SharePoint. GI&S Tools for the general user also support ongoing theatre efforts for geospatial collaboration in partnership with agencies like the PACOM/JIOC.
