Tracking Sediment Dredging and Placement with Online Maps

—Rose Doposovic, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

As part of the US Army Corps of Engineers' Regional Sediment Management program, coastal engineers are interested in tracking sediment placement locations for dredged material. The Regional Sediment Manager Project Database website has recently launched a module to view basic level contract data together (Project Name, Contract Number, Bid Open Date, Cost, Start Date, End Date, Quantity Dredged, Quantity Placed, Material Type, and Material Source) with locations of dredging activities to placement sites. Auto-generated Google Earth KMLs are used in conjunction with geodatabase coordinates to plot locations in a mapping environment. And, in efforts to coordinate regional sediment management practices, interested stakeholders can request sediment (for the purposes of beachfill material, storm damage reduction, erosion control, etc.) or dredging activity for a selected area of interest using Esri's API for JavaScript. All registered users can view submitted requests to see regional activity that is planned in the future.
