Building the National Broadband Map - An Orchestrated Approach

—Mike Byrne, GIO, FCC; Jon Gottsegen, GIS Coordinator, State of Colorado & NSGIC President

Achieving the Obama Administration's goals for good government, transparency and accountability requires a fresh look at how government works and who it works with. Reaching out to NGOs, citizens and private sector as partners has opened up a new pathway to innovation. Cross sector collaboration and an open exchange of ideas is spurring creativity and redefining government approaches. Diverse panelists from government and outside of government will share their experiences and perspectives going forward.

When challenged to produce a national broadband map in a very short amount of time, the FCC devised a strategy to partner with the states and distribute the work. The framework for this win-win partnership required the FCC to set standards and then financially supported the states to do the heavy lifting of compiling their local data and feeding it back to the FCC. This multi-jurisdictional collaboration results in a high priority national data set produced in record time.
