Can RMTK Tools Be Used to Streamline UXO/MEC Project Planning?

—Judy Reagan, Geographic Information Services, Inc.

Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) or Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) contamination remain a high-priority issue for the (DoD). Over 1,000 DoD sites comprising about 10 million acres, are known to or are suspected of containing UXO. Estimates to remediate the full acreage exceed tens of billions of dollars. The actual number of contaminated acres is estimated at 20 percent of those 10 million acres.

Can the use of DoD's Range Managers Toolkit tools aid in a more targeted (and presumably more cost-effective) identification of MEC study areas? This paper will explore how five of the tools could be adapted for use in historical evaluations to refine the MRS or new investigation/remediation areas.
